Let us study, say, a cloud. What’s so great about a cloud? We can understand the greatness if we can compare that phenomenon with our human ability. Literally thousands of tons of water pours down as rain every day on the planet. Now, if humans have to do that job, just imagine how much effort is required! First of all, water needs to be collected from the vast seas into a reservoir; then it has to be desalinated (which, till date, cannot be perfectly done), carried by flying tankers of gigantic proportions and pour it on the land. To do this on the scale that is happening in nature is absolutely impossible.

But just see how Kṛṣṇa does it—absolutely effortless! He uses the sun to lift tons of water from the seas, perfectly desalinating it in the process, carry them using the air, with absolutely no tankers or wings—how amazing is that?!—and then pouring down the purest possible water for our consumption and to facilitate agriculture. Everything is happening so efficiently that He does not even need to personally supervise it. Nature is automatically doing it. The creation is full of such wonders or miracles.

This is the proper understanding of the power and finesse of God. All these natural phenomena that we observe are not some uncoordinated accidental events. They are perfectly planned and executed by the trusted agency of Kṛṣṇa called Durgā (the superintendent of the material energy). Lord Kṛṣṇa confirms this in the Bhagavad-gītā (9.10) as follows:

mayādhyakṣeṇa prakṛtiḥ

sūyate sa-carācaram

hetunānena kaunteya

jagad viparivartate

“This material nature is working under My direction, O son of Kuntī, and it is producing all moving and unmoving beings. By its rule this manifestation is created and annihilated again and again.”

The same is confirmed in the Brahma-saṁhitā (5.44) as follows:

sṛṣṭi-sthiti-pralaya-sādhana-śaktir ekā

chāyeva yasya bhuvanāni bibharti Durgā

icchānurūpam api yasya ca ceṣṭate sā

govindam ādi-puruṣaṁ tam ahaṁ bhajāmi

“The external potency Māyā who is of the nature of the shadow of the cit potency, is worshiped by all people as Durgā, the creating, preserving and destroying agency of this mundane world. I adore the primeval Lord Govinda in accordance with whose will Durgā conducts herself.”

Kṛṣṇa mentions again in the Bhagavad-gītā (10.41-42) that: “Know that all opulent, beautiful and glorious creations spring from but a spark of My splendor. With a single fragment of Myself I pervade and support this entire universe.”

According to the Vedic literatures, we can understand that we are now living in the dark age of kali-yuga, which is infested with irreligion. People are generally in ignorance regarding the knowledge of God. There are many who accept someone as worshipable because he displays some “miracles” which are nothing more than cheap displays of insignificant powers and which in no way solve the problem of repeated cycle of birth and death. There is nothing more unfortunate than to take no notice of the innumerable miracles that God is constantly performing while worshiping someone who is an ordinary conditioned soul.

Sometimes we find people demanding God to show some miracle if He at all is that powerful as He claims in the scriptures. For a fact, God can do anything but He chooses not to reveal Himself to the insubmissive. Our particular situations are imposed upon us by Him according to our past deeds. The Brahma-saṁhitā (5.54) says: yas tv indragopam athavendram aho sva-karma-bandhānurūpa-phala-bhājanam ātanoti — everyone, from the smallest microbe up to the King of heaven, Indra, is subject to the laws of karma. The stringent laws of karma are laid down by Lord Kṛṣṇa Himself and are executed by His trusted agent Durgā-devī.

After having sinned and being awarded a suitable situation just befitting our past deeds, we should not put the blame on the Lord or demand Him to release us by displaying some miracle. But there is a select elite group of souls to whom the Lord displays the ultimate miracle of releasing the influence of the illusory energy and take us back home, back to Godhead. And the good news is that we can be part of that elite group. Lord Kṛṣṇa gives us the clue how to get into that group.

daivī hy eṣā guṇa-mayī

mama māyā duratyayā

mām eva ye prapadyante

māyām etāṁ taranti te

“This divine energy of Mine, consisting of the three modes of material nature, is difficult to overcome. But those who have surrendered unto Me can easily cross beyond it.”

So challenge or demand is not the right approach to God. Surrender is. Therefore it behooves every intelligent human being to surrender to Lord Krsna without reservation through the via medium of a bona fide spiritual master. Then one can be released from this material world. Now, that is a real miracle! [End]
